From the Photography & EcoEkphrastic Workshops on Earth Day at Gunston

Updated: Apr 20, 2018

Check out the work Gunston students did today in the photography and writing workshop, led by photo instructor Jess Newell and poets David Miller and Amanda Newell. At the beginning of the session, students were introduced to the basic principles of ecopoetry, and Jess Newell offered a quick lesson in best photography practices before students went outside to explore the natural world through the camera lens.

Once they returned to the classroom, students were asked to describe one photo they took in as much detail as possible. They were challenged to pose a question in their response, as well. Ekphrastic poetry or writing is typically written as a direct response to a work of art, so they were essentially looking at their own work of art through yet another lens: that of writing.
